History
Howard T. Fleeson, a graduate of Yale Law School, joined the firm in 1923. Mr. Fleeson practiced primarily in business, insurance and bankruptcy litigation. He also served as a referee in bankruptcy court. He was well-known for his representation of the Southwest Kansas Royalty Owners Association and of the Fall River landowners against the federal government's condemnation actions. Wayne Coulson first became associated with the firm as a bookkeeper. Mr. Coulson studied law under Howard Fleeson and joined the firm in 1935. He earned a reputation for his work as an appellate lawyer and as the City of Wichita's special counsel in the condemnation actions for the Valley Center flood control project (the Big Ditch) and the 1963 water rights dispute over ownership of the Equus Beds. Homer V. Gooing, a graduate of Washburn College and Law School, joined the firm as a partner in 1944 after having practiced law in Eureka, Kansas, for a number of years. His practice was concentrated in the areas of estates, trusts, real property and contracts. He was known as a meticulous draftsman. Paul R. Kitch joined the firm in 1935, following his graduation from the University of Chicago Law School. Mr. Kitch practiced corporate, business and commercial litigation. A colleague described Mr. Kitch as "one of the most resourceful trial lawyers that ever stepped in a courtroom."
